Not All Clays Are Alike
The mineral content and physical structure of each type of clay determine its effect on human skin. Most clays absorb toxins and excess 
oils, but each clay differs in its degree of absorption. We offer natural clays to meet the requirements of many different health and beauty products:
- Red (kaolin) clay is rich in iron oxide, which gives it its reddish hue. It draws oils and impurities from the skin and acts as a natural color additive. Like the other montmorillonite clays, this material draws oils and impurities from skin, and many soaps and cosmetics use it to give their products a distinctive red color. Red clay also eases aching or sore muscles, but due to its strong absorption properties, people with dry or sensitive skin should use it no more than once a week.
- Black (illite) clay is a biomineral comprised of decomposed plant material and trace minerals such as calcium, aluminum, silica, copper, and zinc. It usually appears in marine shales and related sediments. This clay has a highly porous crystal structure, which makes it very good at drying and removing impurities from skin. Alternative medical practitioners use this clay to treat many health and skin problems, valuing it for its ability to perform well with normal and oily skin types.
